Baby Yoda Amigurumi (+ link to free pattern)

How’s everyone doing? We are now halfway through 2020 and still fighting the pandemic. With everything that is going around the world, I have found myself starting to take a totally different approach with my creativity. Instead of allowing myself to fall into the creative blackhole of overthinking, I have been embracing the idea of “just creating because I can”. Earlier this week, I even made a Baby Yoda amigurumi using a free pattern!

Before we get into this project, I just want to put out a huge disclaimer and say that I’m not a Star Wars fan. Sure, I’ve watched all the Star Wars movies but I have no strong opinions on which one is the “best” movie of the entire franchise.

But one thing is for sure, I appreciate cuteness and understand the hype that surrounds The Child (aka Baby Yoda) when it first came out. Since my brother is a fan of Yoda and I happen to have this green and beige yarn in my stash, I decided to make a Baby Yoda amigurumi with a free pattern that I came across.

I made my Baby Yoda amigurumi using the free crochet pattern by Philae Artes. The pattern is easy to read and follow.

Here are some of details of my version:

Materials

Yarn used: Marvel Plain 8 ply (acrylic yarn by Moda Vera via Spotlight Singapore)
Hook size used: 4.50 mm
Pattern modification: None

Finished size

Height: 11.5 cm
Width: 9.5 tomorrow (across the base)

Pattern notes

The original pattern yields a small Baby Yoda of about 4" / 10cm tall. I wanted to make a bigger version but was too lazy to do math to convert the pattern. So, I used 2 strands of the yarn! Turns out, my version of the Baby Yoda amigurumi isn't much taller but it seems a little wider based on the photos provided in the original pattern. If you’re thinking about making a bigger version, you could consider the using the same trick!

While I had no issues with most of the pattern, I struggled with the design of the sleeves and the collar. At first, I felt a bit unsure about the sleeves included in the pattern. But after reviewing some pictures of The Child online, I decided to use them. I’m not sure if my use of double-strand 8 ply yarn impacted anything, but I think the pattern of the sleeves could be broader to cover the whole arms.

If you see the photo of the doll before sewing the collar on, you will find the sleeves looking a little short. While deciding whether to sew the sleeve piece on, I also wondered if the designer meant for the sleeve piece to be just the sleeve cuff (rather than the whole sleeve). Anyway, I decided to keep the sleeves and sewed them onto the arms.

I also took a while to finalise the placement of the collar. In the end, I decided to leave the region between the upper collar and the head open (rather than stitched together). This gives the look of a shadow between the collar and the head, which is what the real Baby Yoda seems to have, based on pictures I found online.

Final thoughts

It was really fun to create something on a whim like this. I don't do this often but it's a fun palate-cleanser for me.

Are you a Star Wars fan? What do you think of my version of the Baby Yoda amigurumi using this pattern?
