Watermelon Button Front Mini Skirt (Mollie Makes 119)

Hi everyone! Today, I am sharing a different version of the button front mini skirt from the tutorial I wrote for the July issue of Mollie Makes magazine (Issue 119). In the original tutorial, I used a floral fabric with 6 buttons (~ 3/8" wide each). In this version of the button front mini skirt, I used a medium-weight cotton in a super juicy-looking watermelon print.

The 2 modifications I made to this watermelon button front mini skirt are:

  • adding more buttons
  • adding a ribbon trim along the hem

More Buttons

I have a huge stash of these vintage 7/8 " / 2.25 cm wide buttons with me, and even though I have been using them for my Black and White Striped series, I still have so much to spare! So, I decided to go a little overboard and added a total of 9 buttons to the skirt. These black buttons provide a great contrast against the red fabric, and also remind me of the seeds of the watermelon!

Ribbon Trim

To mimic the rind of the watermelon, I added a 5/8 " / 1.5 cm wide green grosgrain ribbon along the bottom of the skirt. This is sewn approximately 6/8 " / 2 cm from the hem. It took me a couple of attempts to get the ends meet nicely at the front of the skirt. But it was all worth it! I think this really adds the nice touch and make the skirt look extra cute and ... watermelon-y.. hehe.

I love sewing with kitschy, fruity prints like this. While I have used a lemon print and a cherry print, this is the first time I am using a watermelon print. I still have a little bit of yardage left after making this mini skirt, and I am wondering what else I can make to go with this skirt. Do you have any suggestions for my next watermelon-themed project?

I hope everyone is keeping well. Obviously, I have no concrete plans for summer. But hey, one day the pandemic will be gone. Right?
