EXCITING NEWS: My newsboy and beret style sewing pattern is live!
Hi everyone! With the arrival of Lunar New Year, it's officially 2022 in my mind and I am so excited to start my creative journey for the year with my very first sewing pattern. Yes! My newsboy and beret style hat sewing pattern is live right now!
The Orion hat is a versatile hat pattern with 2 design options: Design A is newsboy cap with a brim, while design B is brimless, beret-style hat. Whether you want to sew a hat for the Peaky Blinder look, replicate that Taylor Swift's album cover, or just into the mod 60's look, this is the hat pattern for you!

The Orion: A newsboy and beret style hat pattern
Story behind the design
Late last year, I decided that I wanted this style of hat to add to my Autumn/Winter capsule wardrobe project. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a pattern in the exact style that I wanted. Most patterns available had big, poofy crowns and a very wide brim. Personally, I wanted something less bulky-looking, more compact and sleek, and generally just cuter. And so, as I have done with my Hybrid Face Mask and my wedding dress, I decided that the only way for me to get exactly what I wanted, was to design my own pattern.
Design details: (A) newsboy cap, (B) beret hat
The Orion hat comes in 2 designs and is made up of just 3 pattern pieces: crown, band and brim. Design A is a newsboy style cap with an 8-section crown, a 1" wide band, and a brim. Design B is a brim-less beret hat with an 8-section crown and a 1" wide band.
By cutting all 3 pattern pieces out once, you'll be able to make 2 different hat designs!
Finished head measurement
The finished head measurement of the Orion goes between 21" to 25". The difference between your original head measurement and the finished head measurement is the ease.
Here’s a gross description of how the hat will fit depending on the amount of ease:
~0.25” = snug fit
~0.5 - 1.0” = average fit
~1.5” = loose fit
For additional reference, my husband (i.e. the male model pictured below) has a head circumference of 23.75” and enjoys the hat in size 5. Personally, my head circumference is 21” and I wear size 2.
Supplies needed
The ORION hat pattern is designed for non-stretch, woven fabrics. Different fabric weights (i.e. how stiff and how dense/thick the fabric is) may be used for a different style. Light-weight fabrics are fabrics with a softer feel and may be of a looser weave. Heavier weight fabrics are stiffer and thicker.
Only a maximum of 1/2" of the MAIN, LINING, and INTERFACING material is needed for ALL SIZES and BOTH DESIGNS! I'm stating it as 1/2 yd because that's the minimum amount needed to purchase at fabric stores. However, you may need a little bit more fabric for print matching.
Additional supplies and notions
Sharp sewing needle (e.g., Schmetz Jeans)
Tailor’s ham
Fabric covered button x 1 (3/4" - 1" wide)
Edgestitching or zipper foot
Sharp sewing needle. This is really crucial for helping you sew through the brim AND all that bulk at the top of the crown!
Tailor's ham. (Optional)This is used for pressing curved seams open. If you don't have tailor's ham, you can make your own! I made some basic ones for myself using quilting cotton, polyester filling, and the free pattern by Victory Patterns here.

Fabric covered button. (Optional) This is attached to the top of the crown to give a tailored, professional finish to the hat. To maintain proportion in size, I recommend using a 3/4" wide button for sizes 1-3 and 1" wide button for sizes 4-5.
Edgestitching or zipper foot. This helps to make the process of stitching in the ditch (Step 16) easier.
