My Autumn/Winter Sewing Plan for 2022

It’s the time of the year again! If you’re looking for inspiration for autumn/winter sewing and love hearing about capsule wardrobes, you’ll love this post. Today, I am sharing my autumn/winter 2022 sewing plan for my annual autumn/winter (A/W) capsule wardrobe!

An annual creative project

A look from my A/W capsule 2021

The autumn/winter capsule wardrobe is an annual creative project that I started last year because:

  • I hate the colder months

  • I needed a concrete plan to help me stay focused and motivated to continue to create

  • I love capsule wardrobes!

What is a capsule wardrobe?

All the pieces from my A/W 2021 capsule

In my previous post about my A/W 2021 capsule sewing project, I explained the following:

  • What is a capsule wardrobe

  • Why I wanted to build a capsule wardrobe

  • How to build a capsule wardrobe

In this post, I will only be talking about my autumn/winter sewing plan for 2022. I am fully aware that we are just ONE MONTH away from 2023 but spring equinox will only happen on March 20, 2023. For simplicity, I will be referring to this capsule as the 2022 capsule because it began in 2022.

My Autumn/Winter Sewing Plan for 2022

Mood board for my A/W capsule 2022

For my autumn/winter capsule wardrobe this year, I am going for the following key design features:

  • A monochromatic colour scheme (!!)

  • A mod 60’s vibe

The foundation pieces

As usual, my capsule wardrobe begins with a foundation made up of garments that I already have:

  • 2 outerwear: 1 yellow grid pea coat + 1 vintage speckled cable cardigan

  • 2 tops: 1 peachy yellow mohair sweater + 1 grey turtleneck

  • 2 bottoms: 1 vintage bright mustard yellow mini skirt + 1 vintage grey check pleated skirt

The colour palette

My decision for this monochromatic yellow + grey colour palette came about pretty naturally - I really wanted to give my vintage yellow pieces a good chance to shine this year AND I wanted a different type of colour scheme from last year.

Since I went with a complementary scheme last year, I thought trying out a monochromatic colour scheme this year would be fun!

My sewing plan for autumn/winter capsule wardrobe (2022)

Now, here’s another thing that’s different from last year - I am working part-time now! Because of this, I won’t have a lot of time for sewing and I don’t foresee myself going out as often during the weekdays. So, my autumn/winter sewing plan for this year is much smaller.

So, here’s what I will be making for my autumn/winter capsule wardrobe this year:

A cape

For me, a cape is such a classic mid-late 60’s outerwear style. So obviously, I will need one for my mod 60’s inspired autumn/winter capsule wardrobe.

The last time I sewed a cape was wayyyyyy back in 2012 when I was still living in Sydney. I made it with the Simplicity 2023 Sew Simple pattern in a fleece-type material with big, bold navy dots. I wish I still have this cape! Actually, I don’t even know what I did to it… :/

This time, I will be making my cape in this wool blend fabric from Minerva*.

*I am a Minerva brand ambassador and received this fabric for free in exchange for photos on their website.

To give myself a good challenge, I will also be learning to ~draft my own sewing pattern~ as usual. Sooooo, keep an eye out for a drafting and sewing tutorial on my Youtube channel for this!!

A mod 60’s dress

The girly girl side of me feels that every capsule wardrobe MUST include a dress. So, yeah, I NEED to sew a dress for this capsule!

I have been dreaming about this sleeveless André Courrèges scalloped dress for a while now. Considering that I am going for the mod 60’s, streamlined, semi-structured design lines for this capsule wardrobe, there’s no better time than now to get a crack at recreating this dress.

However, with this being a cold-season capsule, I will be making the sleeved version of the dress instead. Right now, my plan is to use the sewing pattern that I drafted for my petal dress as the base for this design. That said, I am also aware that original Courrèges dress appears to be dartless and shapeless from the underarms down so I might end up drafting something from scratch.. again XD

Another honey yellow top

This is a panic-sew project that I stitched up right before my trip to Atlanta for a Friendsgiving party with a number of fellow designers for Know Me Patterns.

@gwenstella.made And so, my Autumn/Winter capsule sewing project has quietly begun (iykyk) ✨ This is a panic sew for a short weekend trip. More fall/winter capsule sewing plans to come!! 🍁#sewtoks #fallsewing #handmadestyle ♬ _Cute - Gabe Lost

I was itching to try sewing something with a faux cable knit design AND I wanted to be able to wear a memade top during the trip. It’s silly, I know.

But this unplanned projected ended up being such a lovely addition to my current A/W 2022 capsule!

A hat

What’s autumn / winter style without a hat to keep your noggin warm? Okay, you know I love my Orion Hat sewing pattern and I can basically make 101 iterations of it and still not get bored. But… I think I want to try something different this year - perhaps a beret (different construction from the Orion) or a pillbox hat? I’m leaving this decision up in the air for now and waiting to see what inspires me once the cape is finished. Who knows, I might have another hat sewing pattern developed from this like before!

Other DIY projects for my autumn/winter capsule wardrobe

Just like I did with my coastal grandmother vacation wardrobe, I want to make use of other skills that I have to create more variety in this capsule wardrobe.

Knitting

When I visited Maine in October, I bought 2 skeins of the Malabrigo Rasta yarn in Frank Ochre with the plan to knit a chunky beanie.

Then, I considered knitting a wee cowl.

After that, I saw the vintage ad (see top left model below) on Pinterest and now I know I absolutely have to knit a little bonnie bonnet. 😊😊😊

Crocheting

I am a big believer in accessories being key pieces that can help transform an outfit. Accessories can really help to inject fun and variety in a capsule wardrobe where things can get boring!

Since I already made plans to sew a hat and knit a bonnet, I turned my focus towards creating a fall/winter appropriate bag. I wanted a quick and easy crochet project that will fit the aesthetic of this capsule wardrobe and I got inspired to make a chunky baguette bag!

The beginner-friendly crochet pattern for this cute chunky baguette bag is now available in my shop and I already made 2 - one in grey and one in bright mustard - the colours of my capsule wardrobe!

Sewing plan for autumn/winter

With all that said, I am super excited about my A/W 2022 capsule sewing plans and I hope you are too! Part of me is worried about starting so late but oh well! I am just going to focus on having fun and enjoying the moment. Better late than never!

Do you have anything specific that you will be making for this season? Let me know what your sewing plans for autumn/winter are and tell me what you think about mine in the comments below!
