8 looks with my handmade striped capsule of 2020

Happy New Year! Before I officially close the book on 2020, I want to take a moment to celebrate this handmade striped capsule that I put together in 2020! In this post, I am sharing 8 looks that I had styled and worn with my handmade striped capsule last year.

Although I made the bibs in 2019, I only finally got around to using the rest of the black and white striped fabric to complete the rest of the capsule in 2020. The shorts, blouse, and bustier were all made when Singapore went into lockdown in the first half of 2020 due to the spread of coronavirus.

Read all about the lowdown on these monochrome striped pieces of this mini capsule!

Fabric

The black and white striped fabric is a polycotton that I purchased online a couple of years back. It features 3/4" wide vertical stripes in black and white. I bought a total of 3.5 yards and used most of them for this mini capsule. A small amount of this fabric was also used as the lining for my Raspberry Rucksack.

Exterior fabric: Laminated cotton (via Minerva.com, gifted in exchange for a blogpost)
Lining fabric: Striped polycotton

Sewing the mini striped capsule wardrobe

Since I only had 3.5 yards of the fabric, I decided to make a mini summer capsule with 2 bottoms and 2 tops.

The bibs

I made these bibs using the Burnside Bibs pattern in 2019. They were part of my work wardrobe in late 2019 and early 2020, so they definitely got lots of wear!

Collared blouse

This blouse is made using the vintage 1950's McCall's 3730 pattern. I really love the puffed sleeves and the round collar on this blouse! The sewing process is shared on my Youtube channel here.

High-waisted shorts

The inspiration behind this pair of high-waisted shorts came from a photo I saw on Crash The Party's Instagram page. As I didn't have my usual pattern block available, I ended up hacking the Burnside Bibs pattern to make the shorts.

Also, by the time I got to sewing this pair of shorts, I had very little yardage left and had to resort to piecing different pieces together to make up the shorts. It's kind of a silly thing I did but it was so satisfying to be able to squeeze another garment out using limited yardage available!

The entire cutting and sewing process is also shared on Youtube here.

Itty bitty suntop

My forever favourite, a vintage 1950's inspired bustier! It should come as no surprise that this suntop is made using the Simplicity 8130 - a pattern I have used multiple times.

This vintage style summer staple is sewn together using the last remaining scrap pieces of the striped fabric and some other plain cottons I had in my stash. I also hacked the Simplicity 8130 pattern to include bra insert pockets and a shirred elastic back for easy wear. Again, the sewing process is also on my Youtube channel here!
